In 2018 and 2019, in order to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Longue Route of Bernard Moitessier and to pay a tribute to the great sailor he was, the navigator Guy Bernardin proposed to other enthusiasts to sail again around the world by the three capes, alone and without calls. Guy would then have been 74 years old, with behind him five trips around the world and six passages from Cape Horn. He disappeared at sea during the summer of 2017 when he brought back from United States to France the sailboat he had just bought to participate in this adventure.
According to the spirit of Bernard Moitessier, this round the world is not a race: it’s a pilgrimage, there is no regulation, no constraints, no obligations, no price either … Just the ultimate reward to have realized a dream and to have transcended oneself. It is a return to the true values, personal human responsibilities of every man and every sailor. The freedom, the serenity of being at sea, alone facing the ocean.
Each sailor is free of his choice of boat, with a length less than 52 feet (15,80 meters approximately), suitable for ocean passages. Everyone is free to communicate as he wishes, display the colors of partners or sponsors that he can find, and to promote his adventure by all means at his disposal. It is up to him to judge whether, in doing so, he respects the idea of Bernard Moitessier or not … Depending on his sailboat and equipment, everyone also is free from his day of departure between June 18 and September 30, 2018 , from a port north of the 45 ° North of the European coast, or 41 ° North of the American East coast, return to same harbour if possible.
A gathering of the participants is planned at the Bono, burial place of Bernard Moitessier, on June 16 and 17, 2018, the anniversary of his death in 1994, with feast and cultural activities with the assistance of the local societies and the town hall.
Each entrant will associate the two great seamen in his pilgrimage around the world : Bernard to be the one who made him dream, often since childhood or adolescence ; and Guy, who by his challenge, made the dream comes true.
